SLATE FLOOR CLEANING AND RESTORATION

Slate is a natural stone floor material that is quarried. It is a metamorphic rock that has been compressed over time by heat and pressure. Slate is often black, dark green, or grey. This is due to carbon and graphite in the stone. Tans, reds, and purple colours are formed when iron is present, whereas green colours are a result of chlorite. The stone's country of origin also influences its colour. Slate is stain-resistant, less porous than other stones and is not easily etched by acidic liquids.

At Pro StoneClean, we expertly deep clean slate, remove old waxes, grind away scratches, restore colour, apply a wet finish look, remove stains, and offer maintenance advice for long-lasting slate flooring. We specialise in all aspects of slate floor restoration and cleaning.

SLATE FLOOR CLEANING PROCESS

The majority of the time, slate floors have had a topical sealer applied to the surface of the floor, historically or as a routine maintenance solution, often applied in multiple layers. These "mop and shine" products can be difficult to remove. Here’s how we achieve the best outcomes:

STEP

01

Any topical sealer will be removed using a combination of a stripping product and mechanical action.

STEP

02

Once the remains of a topical surface sealer have been removed, the next step in the process is to deep clean the floor using a quality alkaline cleaner and diamond abrasive powders to assist with the cleaning process. The floor is deep cleaned with a heavy-duty rotary floor machine and a brush attachment. Grout lines and edges are cleaned by hand.

STEP

03

Once the floor has been deep cleaned, it is neutralised and extracted. The floor is then sealed using a quality stone-impregnating colour enhancer to bring out the natural colours of the stone.

SANDSTONE FLOOR CLEANING PROCESS

Sandstone is a sedimentary stone formed by the build-up of sand, clay, and other organic materials. It is a hard textured stone that has a variety of natural, earthy colours. Sandstone is porous and, as a result, will stain relatively easily. Spills will need to be cleaned up straight away, especially dark colours like red wine. Our three-step sandstone floor cleaning process includes the following:

STEP

01

The floor is assessed, and any remains of a topical surface sealer will be stripped if required.

STEP

02

Using quality alkaline cleaner and diamond abrasive powders, the floor is deep cleaned with a heavy-duty rotary floor machine, with either a brush or pad attachment, depending on the surface type of your floor. Grout lines and edges are cleaned by hand.

STEP

03

Once the floor has been deep cleaned, the floor is then neutralised and extracted. The floor can then be sealed with either a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer or a combination of an impregnating sealer and a wax dressing.
