LIMESTONE FLOOR CLEANING PROCESS

Limestone is a sedimentary rock and is composed of calcium carbonate. It is occasionally mistaken for marble, but it doesn’t have strong veining characteristics. Limestone forms in warm, shallow waters from the accumulation of shells and coral. Due to this, limestone will quite often have aquatic fossils and shells imprinted into the stone.

Over time, your limestone floor will require professional cleaning to remove ingrained soiling to the surface of the stone and the grout lines. The floor will also benefit from regular sealing from an impregnating stone sealer to ensure your floor is fully protected from liquid staining. Our process covers the following key steps:

STEP

01

The floor is assessed, and any remains of a topical surface sealer will be stripped if required.

STEP

02

Using quality alkaline cleaner and diamond abrasive powders, the floor is cleaned with a heavy-duty rotary floor machine, with either a brush or pad attachment, depending on the type of finish to your floor. Grout lines and edges are cleaned by hand.

STEP

03

Once the floor has been deep cleaned, it is then neutralised, extracted, and sealed using an impregnating stone sealer.

TRAVERTINE FLOOR CLEAN AND RESTORATION

Similar to limestone but formed through a different geological process, travertine is the result of the precipitation of calcite from mineral springs. Due to this process, travertine has numerous pits and holes in its natural, unfilled state as a result of the water flowing through the sediment. These holes and pits are either filled at the factory or, if desired, filled with grout and resin filler. Depending on the finish of your travertine floors, we offer tailored travertine polishing, cleaning, and restoration solutions, removing dirty grout lines and ingrained soil.

TRAVERTINE FLOOR CLEANING PROCESS

Over time, your travertine floor will require professional cleaning to remove ingrained soiling from the surface and holes and pits. Especially on unfilled travertine, the floor will also benefit from regular sealing from an impregnating stone sealer to ensure your floor is fully protected from liquid staining. Our travertine cleaning process involves the following steps:

STEP

01

The floor is assessed, and any remains of a topical surface sealer will be stripped if required.

STEP

02

Using a quality alkaline cleaner and diamond abrasive powders to assist with the cleaning process, the floor is deep cleaned with a heavy-duty rotary floor machine, with either a brush or a cleaning pad attachment, depending on the type of travertine floor. Grout lines and edges are cleaned by hand.

STEP

03

Once the floor has been deep cleaned, it is then neutralised, extracted and sealed using an impregnating stone sealer.

RESTORATION SERVICES (POLISHING AND HONING)

POLISHING

Achieving a polished finish on travertine involves grinding and buffing the stone using different diamond abrasives. Starting with a coarse grit to remove surface damage like scratches and etch marks, we gradually move to finer abrasives for a smooth, shiny surface. This process reduces the stone's porosity, making it less prone to staining compared to a honed finish. However, high-shine finishes can show scratches and etch marks more easily, requiring regular maintenance to keep them looking their best.

HONING

Honing gives travertine a matte appearance by stopping the process before a high shine develops. This creates a natural, organic look and feel to the stone. While a honed finish is less likely to show scratches and etch marks, it has a higher porosity, making it more vulnerable to staining. Regular sealing, care, and maintenance are necessary for both finishes to preserve their beauty. Applying a stone-impregnating sealer is crucial to protect the surface. After allowing the sealer to penetrate, any excess is removed and buffed to ensure an even, smooth finish.
